Nestled within the stepped agricultural terraces at the edge of a forest, Prana overlooks the expansive Nanda Devi Peak within the Himalayan mountain range. This collection of understated guest dwellings offers uninterrupted views of the central Kumaon range of Uttarakhand to the north and west and the Nepalese Himalayas to the east. A ten-hour drive from the nearest airport, the remote location is finally reached either on foot or horseback via a steep mountain trail that winds its way through picturesque forests, villages, streams, farms, and temples.
Prana reimagines and expands upon the original concept of Shakti Leti 360, developed by Studio Mumbai Architects in 2007 for a site further up the valley. Incorporating dry-stacked stone masonry and interlocking timber joinery, materials from the dismantled original project were carefully transported and repurposed for this new terrain. Adapting to the site and an enhanced hospitality program, the project now includes additional guest suites, communal living and dining spaces anchored by large stone fireplaces, guest and staff kitchens, a forest sauna and spa, and a stone yoga terrace.
The structures were meticulously crafted by onsite teams of artisans, using a blend of reclaimed and locally sourced stone, timber, and glass. Handcrafted copper tiles cap each building, while interiors feature rustic stone and timber complemented by bespoke furnishings. Custom brass lighting and handwoven textiles enrich the spaces, with sheep and yak wool carpets from Ladakh and organic Kala cotton bedspreads and cushions from Kutch.
Each structure harmonizes with the existing contours of the land, balancing proximity to nature and sweeping mountain views with the warmth and comfort necessary for Himalayan winters. Against the awe-inspiring backdrop of snowcapped peaks, Prana integrates contemporary sustainable design with vernacular craftsmanship and locally sourced materials. The result is a serene and immersive retreat, offering guests an unparalleled connection to the natural and cultural richness of the region.
